My name is Ted Welser. I am Assistant Professor of Sociology at Ohio University. My research, teaching and writing interests focus on how micro-level processes generate collective outcomes. I am especially interested in status achievement in avocations, development of institutions and social roles, the emergence of cooperation, and network structure in computer mediated interaction.My focus in Wikipedia is facilitating the improvement of articles on these and other topics in the Sociology WikiProject.My interest in Wikipedia is substantive as well. I am currently involved in several research projects that study the development of roles in a variety of online settings, including Wikipedia.

The "first black president" has been beefing with the candidate who’s "not black enough" ... Would Clinton be supporting Obama if his own wife wasn’t running? Perhaps. Would anyone really think Obama was the candidate of change if the media hadn’t chosen Hillary Clinton to be his only competition? Absolutely not.

The problem isn't that Obama hasn't given specifics. He has. In fact, the 2008 Democratic race is by far the heaviest on policy of any nominating contest in recent memory. It's just that voters who aren't paying close attention--and that's most of us--can't "hear" the specifics over all his talk about airier concepts like hope, unity and change.
