A report of botulism prompted Castleberry to recall 10 product lines under various brand names on July 19th, 2007. The recall has been expanded to over 90 products, including Natural Balance pet foods products that are manufactured to human quality standards. However, dogs and cats are believed to be highly resistant to to botulism toxins.

Natural Balance Pet Foods is taking this voluntary action after learning the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed rice protein concentrate used by American Nutrition contained melamine, a substance not approved for use in food.
Wilbur-Ellis, who supplied Natural Balance with melamine-tainted rice gluten or rice protein concentrate, said it is urging all pet food manufacturers using rice protein concentrate supplied by it to recall any pet food that may be on supermarket shelves. An industrial chemical that led to the nationwide recall of more than 100 brands of cat and dog food has turned up in a second pet food ingredient imported from China. The chemical, melamine, is believed to have contaminated rice protein concentrate used to make a variety of Natural Balance Pet Foods products for both dogs and cats.
