The McGhee Center was founded in 1989 after Ambassador George Crews McGhee, former U.S. ambassador to Turkey and West Germany, donated his Mediterranean villa to Georgetown University to create a center for the study of the history and culture of Turkey and the Eastern Mediterranean. The McGhee Center is academically affiliated in Turkey with Koç University and presently offers three types of programming:Semester Abroad in Turkey: The McGhee Center offers a semester-abroad program open to all university undergraduate students. The semester-abroad program emphasizes broad-based exposure to the history and culture of the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as to the culture and politics of contemporary Turkey. The semester abroad program has operated since 1990 and has more than 200 alumni.Summer Institute in Intensive Turkish Language: Since 2007 the McGhee Center has hosted a summer language program in intensive accelerated beginning Turkish.
