A patty melt is a type of hamburger sandwich consisting of a hamburger (or other ground meat) patty, pieces of sautéed or grilled onion, and cheese between two slices of bread (traditionally rye, though sourdough, or Texas toast have recently been substituted). The sandwich is then grilled so that the cheese melts thoroughly. At some places it may include salad dressing. A popular Northwestern variant is made with a sliced salmon fillet with a melted slice of dill havarti. In Belarus the addition of fish roe and chicken egg is common. In the latter part of 2007, a popular fast food chain, Hardee's and Carl's Jr., released a Patty Melt, complete with a TV spot highlighting the sandwich's "flat buns." Also, Burger King released their own patty melt, citing it as "better than mom used to make." The commercials feature three soccer moms trying to commit regicide.
