Child was an American parenting magazine founded by Jackie Leo and MaryAnn Sommers in 1986. It was originally backed by Italian publishers, then sold to The New York Times Magazine Group which published it until 1995 along with its other women’s magazines, including Family Circle, before selling the titles to Gruner + Jahr. The Meredith Corporation acquired the Gruner & Jahr group in 2005.Child was originally aimed at "sophisticated", dual-career parents, as reflected in its motto, "Raising Kids With Smarts and Style". However, according to industry observers, it never quite found its niche in a market segment that included more established Meredith titles like American Baby, Parents, and Family Circle. In its later years it struggled, as its circulation dropped by roughly a quarter from a high of a million subscribers in 2005. Ad pages fell at a rate higher than the industry average in early 2006, and Meredith responded by reducing the magazine's advertising rate base and its newsstand presence.The only growth the magazine experienced was in visits to its website, so Meredith decided in 2007 to fold the print version and focus on child.com as a portal to its other magazines. Although Meredith did not comment on its reasons for ending publication, industry analysts suggested that the company would be unwilling to sell the title to a company that might compete with their existing parenting titles. Instead, Meredith decided to fold it.The magazine had become more mainstream over the years, although it continued to run fashion spreads, travel pieces on out-of-the-way, exotic vacation destinations and recipes for healthy, high-end snacks and meals until its very last issues. Contributing writers during its run included Cynthia Rowley and Penelope Leach.
