TiVo's patent for a "multimedia time warping system" has been upheld by the US Patent Office. As a result, Dish Network is faced with an order forcing it to disable the functionality of its customers' DVRs.

Essentially, the satellite tv service providers - Bell ExpressVu, Dish Network, and Direct TV (in north america) protect their signals using a complex encryption system embedded into the signal itself.
