Vegetarianism is the practice of a diet that excludes all animal flesh, including poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea, and slaughter by-products. Scientists have made the world-first discovery that a pregnant woman's diet determines whether her baby grows into a fat adult or a skinny one... a mother's diet during pregnancy affects the baby's brain circuits, determining appetite and energy expenditure in their offspring.


In an attempt to overcome the obesity problem the Scottish government will take initiative to provide free fruit to pregnant women and pre-school children. A budget of £40m is earmarked for this purpose that extends to the period of three years. This will have a far reaching impact on nation's health.

Pregnant women who eat a Mediterranean diet rich in fish, fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes, nuts, dairy products and olive oil may help protect their children against asthma and allergies, new research suggests.
